And so it is here, the last derby at White Hart Lane, so many great memories from a stadium where we’ve won two titles, it will be sorely missed. The pretenders of North London have decided to build a new stadium like us 11 years later. Just like the number of titles, they are well behind in this respect also.
It has been a horrendous season by our standards in the league, but no matter how dreadful the situation is if the players aren’t motivated to beat Tottenham, they simply aren’t fit to wear the Arsenal shirt. This promises to be a cracker.
In addition to this being a derby, there’s plenty of reasons why this match is so important:
Top 4 is still a possibility
It will be difficult that’s for sure, we have not made it easy for ourselves however a win here would be a huge confidence booster into upcoming fixtures such as Stoke away and Manchester United at home. It would put us just 2 points behind Manchester City in 4th place. Conversely a loss could have huge psychological implications in terms of belief and confidence going forward having to bridge a large gap.
This will all but stop Spurs from winning the title
Unfortunately St Totteringham’s Day is cancelled this year and our rivals are hot on the heels of Chelsea. While we cannot win the title this season, the next best thing would be to stop those guys from winning it. A win here would be as close to a knockout blow as you could imagine, leaving them 7 points adrift with four games to play.
As much as it pains me to say it but it is hard to look past them for this fixture. We have only won 1 out of our last 8 there, and have won their last 6 games in a row with their last loss being against Liverpool in February and have only conceded 22 goals all season. At home they are a formidable 15-2-0.
Looking at this fixture off of our horrendous performances against Bayern, WBA and Crystal Palace I was thinking the worst. Thankfully we have switched to a back three and found some sort of form going into this one but the numbers above do not lie and we will have to be at our absolute best to get three points from this one.
I very much think this match will be similar to the corresponding fixture last year with the home team dominating before a late comeback from us. 2-2 again.
