It’s happening everyone. Let’s not kid ourselves, let’s not pretend something good is about to happen, let’s not set us up for inevitable disappointment.
I want Wenger to go, badly, in fact, nothing would make me more happy, but I know that it’s not happening. No announcement is being made because frankly, they are waiting for an ideal time to announce it. God knows when that is given how poorly we are playing, maybe they’ll announce after a convincing 5-0 win over Sydney FC in preseason? Anyway, if he was going they’d have announced it by now to give Wenger a proper farewell, and to allow adequate time to find a replacement. It only makes sense that he is almost certainly staying, so we have to accept this reality.
So where to now? Wenger is staying, so what needs to happen? Well I have a few things that must happen if he is staying, and even if they do I have no confidence that Wenger can turn us around, but like I said have to accept and make the best of what we have. I’ve set the bar high, because frankly I have no faith in him. The likelihood of these things happening are almost zero but it’ll go a long way into revealing how deep and systemic our issues really are and how Wenger is killing our club.
If Wenger is staying, he needs to be sitting at a press conference with Alexis Sanchez to his right and Mesut Ozil to his left, and all three of them sign at the same time. This in itself doesn’t mean much, we added almost £100m in players last season when we already had Ozil and Alexis in the squad, but it gives Wenger SOME credibility that he is serious about turning this around. It would also be nice that during this press conference he announces the signing of a key player. God knows that he never does his business early ever, so if he is able to sign all three of these players at the same time as his contract then maybe, just maybe he can turn this around.
New medical staff
Get rid of them. All of them. There is a deep rooted problem with Arsenal’s players and injuries. If this isn’t obvious enough to you just compare how many days Ozil and Welbeck were fit before and after they signed with Arsenal. It is always key players as well. If it is not the medical staff then fix the training methods. If it’s because players are being overplayed stop overplaying them. Arsene needs to make this promise.
Wenger must address the mental disintegration that his squad experiences every November and February. This is simply not acceptable anymore and a sports psychologist is a must. Wenger is no longer capable of motivating his players from a psychological perspective and this job needs to be outsourced.
Signing squad players
One of the biggest things Wenger apologists love to talk about is other clubs spending money for the sake of spending to put players on the bench. This statement is hilarious. It is called squad depth. The funniest thing is given our injury record and players who become “mentally jaded” a big squad is exactly what arsenal needs. When you consider that someone as important as Santi Cazorla, arguably our second most important player this season missed most of the season, and is generally injury prone, you know you need backup. Wenger never ever signs players for squad depth, in fact it took injuries to Mertesacker and Gabriel for him to sign Mustafi. This is not an isolated example, do I need to remind you of the previous season where we didn’t sign a single outfield player?
Former players (preferably Invincibles) need to be involved
If we can’t get the Invincibles back on the field we need the next best thing. We need the likes of Vieira, Pires and Henry to come back to the club preferably in a coaching capacity and instil their experiences and knowledge to bring this club back from the brink. Who better than these players to help bring the club back to their glory days? We have an owner and a board who couldn’t care less about football, we need more heart and footballing identity back in the club. The club is slowly losing its soul but it is not too late.
We have to accept Wenger will be our manager for the foreseeable future. Things will not change any time soon so we may as well support him. I just hope he makes the changes above and shows he is really serious, although it might just be wishful thinking. For a man who hasn’t got it right for 13 years, I’m not going to hold my breath that he gets it right next season.
